The item illustrated in this photo is a set of Garifuna drums. They are called primero (tenor) and segunda (bass). These drums have great meaning to the Garinagu as they form part of their festivals, rituals, masses and funerals. These drums are played to produce different rhythms in times of sorrow and joy. These drums and the sound of these drums will always remind me of home. It didn’t matter that I do not come from the Garifuna ethnic group; we grew up celebrating and dancing together. The different ethnic groups enjoyed each other’s food, clothing, music and folklore. The drums especially have been heard and appreciated throughout Belize. I value this object because it represents the unity that our country can have. No matter which ethnic group, we all feel united at the beat of these drums.
